More about the creator of Sus Historias

Born in the small state of Providence, Rhode Island 1997, Allison Hernandez was born into a Guatemalan immigrant family. Both owners of a Guatemalan bakery in Providence, Allison's parents instilled a sense of pride for her roots and Latino community by exposing her to her culture since she could remember.

 

Growing up, her parents participated in immigration protests in Providence, Rhode Island. Her father, an undocumented immigrant when she was a child, was deported when she was nine years old. He spent six months in Guatemala before coming back to obtain his residency and soon after, his citizenship. This time period in her life marked her and inspired her to speak on and advocate for immigrant's rights throughout her life, both personally and academically.

Today, she is obtaining her Master's Degree at the University of Rhode Island and currently holds a Bachelors in Psychology and Gender and Women's Studies from the University of Rhode Island. Much of her time has been spent learning about institutions, policies and systems that make up our society and how we play a role in creating a change in our world towards a more equal and equitable future.

Graduating in May 2022, Allison hopes to one day take Sus Historias and open up her own NGO to provide a safe and inclusive space for immigrants from all over as well as provide resources and support in their experiences as an immigrant.

She hopes that through this website and instagram page for Sus Historias, that people can learn more about being an immigrant and relate through stories or experiences to understand how different yet similar we all are.
